Natural pregnancy is one of many types of pregnancies during which a happy mother is eagerly anticipating a child. However, there are other types of pregnancies which you should be aware of, as they can be life-threatening to you and your baby.
Below is a schedule summarizing the different types of pregnancies:
|Treatment||When you should visit a doctor||How it happens||Pregnancy type|
|No treatment necessary, usual doctor visits are necessary for following up.||When a regular period is late or when you experience nausea and morning sickness.
|Natural pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg is pushed inside the uterine wall. The fertilized egg develops to become the embryo and placenta. Usually, natural pregnancy lasts up to 42 weeks.
|A molar pregnancy can be treated either by evacuating the uterus or with a uterine suction procedure. A doctor makes sure that there are no moles left in the uterus, as it can lead to cancer. A doctor would recommend avoiding conception for a year after the procedure.||A molar pregnancy can be examined with an ultrasound. It will show no embryo in the uterus.||A molar pregnancy is an abnormal type of pregnancy. It occurs when a sperm fertilizes an egg which does not contain an original maternal nucleus. As a result, a fertilized egg will form with 46 chromosomes, yet without an embryo. A pregnancy test will be positive, as the HCG hormone is released.
|Molar Pregnancy (a complete mole)|
|A partial mole pregnancy can be treated either by evacuating the uterus or with a uterine suction procedure. A doctor makes sure that there are no moles left in the uterus, as it can lead to cancer. A doctor would recommend avoiding conception for a year after the procedure.
|A partial mole is examined with an ultrasound. It will show a deformed embryo in the uterus.||A partial mole occurs when an egg is fertilized by two sperms which duplicate themselves, yielding a genotype of 96 chromosomes, which results in a deformed embryo. Symptoms include extreme nausea and vaginal bleeding.||Molar Pregnancy (a partial mole)|
|No treatment is required. The doctor will either carry out a minor operation to extract the sac, or wait for a natural abortion. A woman will need to wait for four months before attempting to get pregnant again.
|An ultrasound will show an empty sac without an embryo.||Anembryonic pregnancy occurs when a pregnancy does not progress, due to the rejection of the embryo by the body.
|Surgery is necessary for women diagnosed with this type of pregnancy to treat it completely and avoid further complications.||A doctor can detect an ectopic pregnancy through an OBGYN examination, and with ultrasound.||Ectopic pregnancy is a complication which occurs when an embryo grows outside of the uterine wall. This type of pregnancy could occur due to an infection or disease in the mother’s reproductive system.||Ectopic Pregnancy|
|This is a natural type of pregnancy and does not require treatment. Regular visits to the doctor are necessary.||When a woman takes a home pregnancy test after a late period and it is positive.||Pregnancy with twins happens either when two eggs are fertilized by two separate sperms, or when one egg is fertilized by one sperm and this fertilized egg then splits into two identical halves.
Pregnancy with twins can be the result of genetic factors, or of some types of ovarian stimulation medication.
