Some women may become confused when they are pregnant with regard to symptoms they are unable to identify in terms of intensity and severity. Below are some of the major symptoms you should pay attention to during pregnancy, as they require immediate medical attention.

Depression and Anxiety:

 

All over the world, women experience pregnancy with a myriad of emotions, some of which may be extremely harmful. The hormonal changes women experience while pregnant can result in anxiety and depression.

Depression can have many negative implications for the pregnant woman and her fetus. If the depression is overwhelming, the mother may neglect taking her supplements, lose her appetite, or even fail to follow the doctor’s instructions for a healthy pregnancy.

We encourage you, if you have signs of even mild depression, to focus on getting the support and help you need from your loved ones to avoid harmful consequences to yourself and your baby.

 

Frequent Urination:

A common symptom of pregnancy is frequent urination, which results from the fetus’s position over the bladder. This symptom will increase as the fetus grows, leading to more pressure on your bladder.

Consult with your doctor if you experience a burning sensation while urinating, as this indicates a urinary tract infection which requires immediate treatment. We advise you to increase your water intake and follow the instructions given by your doctor to facilitate your recovery.

 

Skin Spots and Pigmentation:

One of the many skin problems women experience while pregnant is pigmentation and dark spots appearing on the face and neck. Pregnancy hormones have an immediate effect on the production of melanin produced within the skin cells. The melanin pigment controls the skin color in humans, and it can be affected by external factors such as being exposed to sunlight, making pregnant women more susceptible to skin pigmentation and dark circles.

 

Hair Loss:

Hair loss varies amongst women during pregnancy. Some are likely to enjoy healthy looking hair, while others may suffer from hair loss and damaged hair. Here are a few factors which may lead to increased hair loss in pregnant women:

  • An unbalanced diet.
  • Not having a sufficient intake of vitamins and minerals.
  • Hormonal changes, especially progesterone, which has damaging effects on hair health.
  • Combing the hair while wet and not styling it properly.

 

Bleeding:

It is common for women to find a few drops of blood while pregnant. In most cases you should not be alarmed if you experience intermittent vaginal bleeding, particularly if the bleeding is not heavy.

However, if the bleeding is heavy or unexpected, it is best to check with your doctor to determine the cause of the bleeding.

 

Heartburn:

Moms-to-be are often troubled by heartburn because of the relaxing effects on the muscles of the pregnancy hormone progesterone, which can cause the stomach valve keeping the acid out of the esophagus to relax.

Making heartburn even worse is the fact that the fetus growing in the uterus will be pushing the acid into the esophagus.

To help reduce the heartburn sensation while pregnant, avoid food that can increase the acidity level in your stomach, such as spicy/fatty foods and chocolate.

Also, try to make your portion sizes smaller, eating more frequently during the day rather than having big meals.

 

Dizziness and Blood Pressure:

During the first few weeks of pregnancy, women can experience dizziness, which is a common symptom for expecting mothers. Usually associated with the pressure of the uterus on blood vessels, lightheadedness can also occur during the third trimester or at a later stage of pregnancy as the weight of the fetus presses on the vena cava.

If you are experiencing dizziness, it is always a safer option to visit your doctor and identify the primary cause of your lightheadedness.

To manage the dizziness, make sure you avoid sudden changes in movement such as when changing from a lying position to a seated one. Also, do not engage in intense activities that could exhaust your body.
